TES have recently commenced work on a flagship project at Barrow, Cumbria, for United Utilities. The \u00a36m project, delivered under highly complex and sensitive environmental conditions, will provide increased capacity of the outfall pumping station at Barrow to ensure all required flow is transferred down the new sea outfall.<\/p>\n
TES were nominated as the M&E specialist contractor responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the mechanical and electrical package at the new Tidal Pumping Station, along with the upgrade of an existing Transfer Pumping Station.<\/p>\n
It is intended that the project shall adapt and improve the existing tidal pumping arrangements at Barrow WwTW to accommodate the resulting change in hydraulic conditions from the new outfall. The new pumping station shall replace the existing tidal pumps and their associated wet well.<\/p>\n
A key objective of the works, according to United Utilities, is to extend and relocate the existing sea outfall discharge location from Barrow WwTW under the Habitats Directive to reduce the potential impact of the current discharge arrangements on the eel grass population.<\/p>\n
The Civil Works which are led by Farrans Construction, will include a new sewer outfall extending 1400 metres across an inter-tidal area and is subject to several special designations including; Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA), a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar (wading birds) protected site.<\/p>\n
